Pneumonia Warning:
The CDC has reported an increase in the frequency of bacterial pneumonia associated with the flu. Pneumonia is a serious disease that is preventable with a separate vaccine currently available at Burns Drugs. If you have not received your H1N1 and annual vaccines this year, you should schedule a pneumococcal vaccine to help prevent serious side effects. (see the links below for more information)

The "flu" is caused by various influenza viruses. The annual flu vaccine protects against three targeted strains. There is also a separate vaccine for the H1N1 (or swine) strain available this year. Flu symptoms tend to be worse, and much longer lasting than "colds" which are caused by various strains of rhino viruses.

  1. All children 6 months up to 5 years of age
  2. Anyone over 50 years of age
  3. Anyone 6 months to 18 years of age on long term aspirin treatment (they could develop Reye Syndrome if they got the flu)
  4. Women who are or may become pregnant during the flu season
  5. Anyone with long term health problems (stop in a see our pharmacist for more information)
